26th October 2010, Comments0 comments

Since starting in the UK in 1947 with just 38,000 members, Bupa has developed into an internationally respected brand. Bupa International was established in 1971 to extend our health cover to expatriates around the globe. Since then, we've grown our membership to over 800,000 people in 190 countries.

A leading global organisation
Bupa International is the specialist international division of Bupa, and we have operations in UK, Denmark, USA, Spain, France, Hong Kong, Egypt and Australia. With headquarters in Brighton, England, Bupa International has the global infrastructure, capabilities and experience to handle the special requirements of our members, wherever they are in the world – something that often local medical insurers are not equipped to offer.

Focused on Bupa International members
By sharing our extensive knowledge and experience with you, we can help protect your health and wellbeing, whatever your individual circumstances.
We care for the lives in our hands, and are dedicated to providing all the insurance services, help and advice you need to keep yourself and your family or your employees in the best of health. Our dedicated team respects everyone's individuality, culture, privacy and dignity, and aims to provide a personal service you can rely on throughout your Bupa International membership.

We understand that expatriates want peace of mind about their health when overseas - and a health insurer they can rely on to provide a high quality service and comprehensive coverage. That is why we have developed a worldwide network of over 7,500 participating hospitals with 40,000 places of treatment in 200 countries.

Understanding that not all expats are the same, and providing products tailored to suit the needs of differing groups, is also key to Bupa International’s success. It is not just by nationality that products are tailored, but also by specific customer groups with Bupa International offering tailored products for the oil and gas industry for example, International Schools, as well as a maritime policy, designed for crew employees who live and work aboard yachts, super yachts or ocean-going vessels.

Medical expertise
You’ll find our Medical Centre an accessible, knowledgeable and comprehensive resource for all health related questions and concerns. Our Medical Centre team will talk in your own language and give you access to medical experts and local facilities around the globe.

Awards and recognition
In 2009, we were delighted to receive the Best International Private Medical Insurance Provider award at the UK's Health Insurance Awards, for the ninth time since 1999.

In 2010, Bupa International won a Queen’s Award for Enterprise. The award is for continued, substantial growth in overseas earnings and commercial success and it is the third time we have won a Queen's Award for Enterprise, having won previously in 1999 and 2005.

Moving forwards
In order to continue to be the world leader in international health insurance for expatriates, we invest time and money in continually developing our systems, products, property, people and technology. We work with hospitals and clinics all over the globe, negotiating appropriate rates and service agreements to help ensure our members get the highest levels of care. We also work with a network of intermediaries and partners to constantly enhance our services, products and communications.

Prepare before you go
Moving to a different continent can be an exciting – and daunting – step in any career. Whatever business you’re in, it’s crucial that you are well prepared for the lifestyle change and have expert support to look after your health when working abroad.

You can take the first steps to good health abroad before getting on the plane. The exact health issues depend on the destination country. Before leaving, you should visit your doctor and check which vaccinations are needed before travelling. This should be done at least six weeks before leaving.

Medical treatment can be costly and healthcare systems vary across the world – for example there will not always be access to a general practitioner.  Standards and access systems vary considerably, so it is a good idea that people working abroad look at purchasing private medical insurance.

It is our aim to provide individuals and companies all over the world with a health insurance service that is second to none.
