Glasgow | 03/09/2009 - 27/09/2009 A painter of poems: Matthijs Maris

Exhibition displaying a selection of works on paper by the Dutch artist Matthijs Maris (1839-1917). All the exhibits on show are from the former private collection of the Glaswegian shipping merchant and collector Sir William Burrell (1861-1958), who, in a period of about forty years, brought together the most important Matthijs Maris collection outside the Netherlands. Many of these charcoal drawings, etchings, watercolours and pastels have not been on display for several decades. The exhibits range from detailed, early drawings made in The Hague and Antwerp, to etchings Maris created while working for the Scottish art dealer Daniel Cottier in the early 1880s, and impressive (charcoal) drawings stemming from the last phase of Maris’s career.
