09/12/2008Dutch unions demand wage increase

FNV continues to demand a 3.5 percent wage increase, which Economic Minister Van der Hoeven considers "inappropriate".

AMSTERDAM - The main Dutch trade union federation FNV says it does not intend to reduce its wage demands, even though spending power is expected to increase in 2009. The union says wages should increase by 3.5 percent.

On Monday, Economic Affairs Minister Maria van der Hoeven said the unions' demands were inappropriate when many businesses were struggling to survive. She also said that spending power will increase by an average of 1.75 percent because inflation is much lower than expected.

The FNV says the minister should not interfere in wage negotiations. The trade union federation says wage increases are good for the economy because they enable people to spend more.
